Canadian healthcare professionals only.

*This tool is intended for patients with chronic obstructive disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

What is it?

The Breath Assess Tool is a resource developed to quickly and easily acquire important information about the magnitude and impact dyspnea, or breathlessness, is having on the lives of COPD patients. It is a single page consisting of three short, quickly answered 'checkbox' questions along with a patient-centric representation of the MRC dyspnea scale. The tool can facilitate a meaningful conversation between a Health Care Practitioner (HCP) and an appropriate person living with COPD.

Why use it?

Is it possible that your COPD patients are having symptoms of breathlessness they are not complaining about? The Breath Assess tool is developed to help uncover those unreported symptoms and their magnitude. The tool was designed to be self-administered by a patient or completed together with the HCP. It is quick, simple and to the point.

Who helped with the tool?

The Breath Assess Tool has been reviewed by Canadian respirologists, family physicians, nurses, certified respiratory educators, and pharmacists. It is endorsed by the Canadian Network for Respiratory Care (CNRC) and COPD Canada. A portion of the resource was adapted from the Medical Research Council (MRC) scale, which is a tool used in the GOLD and CTS guidelines.
